The Arda River flows into two lakes at Kardjali.
One one is around 24 km long and up to 2 km wide the other 32 km long and not quite as deep.
These lakes are 30-40 years old and have never experienced modern carp fishing techniques!
45,000 carp were introduced into the dam in the 1980s.
It is also stocked with Sheatfish, (some specimens of 100 kg have been caught!) and Zander.
Studen Kladenets is the other dam on the River Arda, at Kardjali one of the biggest dams in the country containing rudd and roach.
There is excellent trout fishing on the Arda, mountain streams and lakes, along with pike, carp and bream, to name but a few.
Most of these fish are over 2kg and can be eaten or returned to the water.
There are lots of other small fish species that can be caught for fun or food.
Please Note: Fishing during the month of May is forbidden for all sweet water fish due to spawning.
Salmon fishing in the mountains from October to December is also forbidden.
